Biography
Counselor, researcher, teacher and evaluator: how his career fits together.

Biography
Steve Tutty is a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in child, forensic and neuropsychology.
He has practiced for more than 30 years in clinical and forensic settings across multiple US states, and has spent more than two decades teaching, researching and publishing in clinical psychology. He describes his approach as that of a scientific-practitioner: the testing he chooses and the recommendations he writes are meant to rest on peer-reviewed evidence.
Early clinical work
His career started with ten years of counseling. Most of the children he saw had ADHD or autism; most of the adults were dealing with depression. He has said that this long stretch of hands-on work, rather than a purely academic route where applied experience comes mostly from internships, shaped how he approaches assessment today. He then completed advanced clinical training.
Research
Dr. Tutty has co-authored randomized clinical trials in two areas:
- ADHD. With pediatrician Harlan Gephart, MD, a trial of a program to build behavioral and social skills in children newly diagnosed with ADHD, carried out in a pediatric practice (Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, 2003).
- Depression and telehealth. With principal investigator Greg Simon, MD, a series of studies, starting in 2000, on psychotherapy delivered by telephone to adults treated for depression in primary care (JAMA 2004, General Hospital Psychiatry 2005, Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology 2007, Behavior Therapy 2010).
He is a National Health Scholar. The full publication list, with a plain-language note on each study, is on stevetuttyphd.com.
Clinical and forensic practice
Over his career he has evaluated or treated more than 2,300 children and adolescents with complex neurodevelopmental profiles, including autism, ADHD and twice-exceptional (2E) presentations. He has also evaluated more than 535 adults in personal injury litigation, many with traumatic brain injury, and has given deposition and trial testimony in those cases.
Today he serves New Yorkers in those same two areas through his practice, Aspyre Psychology, at 353 Lexington Avenue. He does not do custody or divorce evaluations, but he does consult with judges, commissioners and attorneys in high-conflict family law disputes.
